Mexican schoolchildren are taught about St. Patrick’s brigade and how Uncle Sam hung them on site without benefit of trial. Reminds me of a Russian story where a sentence of death is passed on a gypsy caught stealing cigarettes, two soldiers are ordered to ride west and hang him from the nearest tree. Five days later they show up in camp and say they can’t find a tree. The lieutenant is furious, orders are orders and he sends them east to find a tree, five days later they come back with the gypsy and the lieutenant changes his orders to have him shot next morning, in the evening the gypsy escapes. It was all just a big joke, the lieutenant knew there were no trees in any direction for hundreds of miles.
