One of the more interesting items I found in a used book was a note written on Swarthmore College stationery. It read "I have the grip. Please call the authorities."

The book was The Dynamics of War and Revolution by Lawrence Dennis

I would say calling a suitcase a grip is archaic. Something they said in the civil war.

Mark Twain probably toted a grip around Europe and the Holy Land.
