Sociopaths (as differentiated from psychopaths) don't normally get in trouble with the law until things don't go their way. Then they do whatever seems to them most expedient. These are the folks who'll kill a spouse because he/she wouldn't get them a new car, and feel that their actions were totally reasonable, and fail utterly to understand why others don't share that view.

There was a case here a few years ago of a woman who systematically poisoned her husband with extremely potent laxatives. He lost 40 pounds, was dreadfully sick, but the second time he showed up at the hospital the medical authorities had become suspicious. Their suspicions were confirmed. The wife tearfully explained that OF COURSE she loved him, but his parents wouldn't give them money for a new house, so she figured that if they thought he was very ill they'd cough up. She was astounded when he began divorce proceedings from his hospital bed.
