Well, JB, you don't have to tell me I worry about this stuff too much, my wife reminds me often enough. On the other hand, I hear so much about the inevitabily of the Microsoft triumph here, I get confused. If I could figure out how much of the Microsoft stock price was realistic expectation of revenue from the core PC OS/Office app things, and how much was expectation of a new internet monopoly, I might actually invest instead of worrying.

Mostly, Microsoft's biggest strenght is the massive installed Windows base, and all the software written against the Roach Motel Windows API. Microsoft's portion of the total app market isn't that big, but there aren't many players there big enough to stand up to them either. I still hold with Java as the way out more that the legal avenue, but I get confused there because everybody's always saying how clever and inevitable Microsoft's Java strategy is.

The thing I like about things like the Novell story is that it sort of blows through the PR fog for all but the hard-core true believers. Windows a wonderful platform for developers? Depends where you are on Bill's radar screen. Kinder, gentler Microsoft? Who's that little line meant to fool? What'll come out of all this? Who knows, but I like the CIO poll better that the one of the general population. As an sorta old time software guy I suffer from the ancient Chinese curse of living in interesting times...

Cheers, Dan.
