Ibexx and all,

An offical comment from Microsoft on the issue of
"Microsoft won't support Novell directory product".

Reuters Story - January 19, 1998 17:46

NEW YORK, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp said
Monday it does not plan to offer technical support to customers
of its Windows NT Server operating software on questions
stemming from deployment of Novell Inc's directory
services (NDS) software.
The move, Microsoft explained in a document on its Web
site, stems from the fact that Novell's NDS overwrites certain
code in the NT operating system.
Directory services refer to the instructions -- including
security features -- that govern user access to files and other
resources across networks.
Microsoft has plans to release soon its own directory
software for Windows NT, called Active Directory.
Microsoft Windows NT Server Group product manager Tanya
vanDam said that because Microsoft did not have access to
Novell's code, the company would not be able to provide support
on questions that arose from an NDS deployment.
However, she disputed the contention of an article in
Infoworld that said Microsoft would refuse technical support
for customers who deploy NDS regardless of whether their issues
related directly to the directory system.
"We will continue to provide support for our customers,"
vanDam said. She said Microsoft was discussing with Novell ways
to address the problem, saying, "We do believe we need to work
closely with Novell on this."
