>>Hey, my Powerbook 3400c sports a VGA port, built-in ethernet and SCSI. All it needs is a parallel port and there won't be anything anyone can say about being locked into Apple hardware. Wasn't that the main thrust of CHRP?<<

That was only part of it.

For the box maker:
1.Allow cloners to make CHRP macs without licensing (paying for) Apple motherboard designs.
2.Built systems cheaply using more standard PC components. Apple ASICs and ROM no longer a requirement.
3. Allow cloners more freedom in designing new motherboards with faster bus speed and incorporate evolving technologies.

For the user:
1. Faster & Cheaper systems.
2. Wider vendor selection
3. Able to run MacOS, WindowsNT, OS-2, BeOS, various UNIX derived OS any other OS ported to PPC. At least that was the plan...
4. Ability to use cheap (and ugly..<g>) PC add-ons and peripherals such as keyboards, mouse...etc.

I hope I didn't miss anything major.
