There is a quote by a Soviet Press Attaché which I have lost. Speaking from memory, this is how it went. The Soviet Press Attache was leaving DC for Moscow and was asked what he thought of the differences between the US and USSR. He answered,

"I have the utmost respect for my American colleagues. They are very professional and use the latest psychological research and the most sophisticated marketing methods in their work...but fundamentally, the difference between us is simple. We don't believe our own propaganda, but you believe yours."

To a great extent, everyone engages in self-deception. Freedom from self-deception is a core promise of Buddhism, and unless someone has practiced honing their skills against self-deception, they suffer from it. Nonetheless, Americans seem to be much more prone to it than other nations. Especially as it relates to national history and ideology. There really is a 24x7 brainwashing campaign here.
