I was just hoping to find an excuse for my error, but noooooo-you wouldn't let me get away with it.
Regarding the hyphen, my reference book, which is the one used in the schools, says this:

A hyphen is used to create new words beginning with the prefixes self, ex, all, great, etc.

I also pulled out my battered Harbrace's and found this which makes great sense to me:

Hyphenate words chiefly to express the idea of a unit or to avoid ambiguity. A hyphenated word may be either two words still in the process of becoming one word or a compound form coined by the writer to fit the occasion.

I found the idea of a word in gestation charming: first the two separate words, then the hyphen as they get to know each other, then union- when the two are joined by God and become as one. Isn't that romantic?
