Elk Lake is my home town it started with the first claim staked, a party of five that included Jack Munroe, famous in the US as a champion boxer. As news of their strikes spread swarms of prospectors formed a tent city with a population between 5,000 and 10,000. In 1909 the settlement was recognized as the town of Elk Lake with Jack Munroe as it's first reeve (mayor) Eventually the silver ran out, when I was a kid it had a population of 500... timber and tourism was the main stay. Some of my friends made a wind fall when the Hunt brothers ran the price of silver up.... pumped out some old mines, found some high grade.
