Innovative companies, especially tech companies, are able to achieve monopoly power first. Then they use their vast wealth and power to engage in regulatory capture through bribery, promises of lucrative jobs, lobbying, etc. Laissez faire capitalism would have us do nothing about this, until basically we live in Fascism. The FTC was created to break up monopolies, before they could get to the point where they corrupt our government. The break up of the telecom sector into the Baby Bells is an example of that, but in the last 20-30 years, the FTC has been relatively quiet, with the exception of the actions it took on MSFT and a few others. On Google and Facebook, they have been completely silent, but seem to be waking up now. Unfortunately, they are too late with Google and Facebook. They have already done tremendous damage to competition and freedom of speech. In addition, Google is openly traitorous, on the one hand not helping the US government with AI, saying they don't want to help create weapons, but then partnering with China in developing their Totalitarian Surveillance State. They need to be reigned in at the least, broken up at the best. Lassez Faire was long been known to not be good for Democracy. We know that Capitalism is the best system, but it needs to be regulated at some basic level. Otherwise, it eats a Democracy until there is nothing left. Look at the TBTF Banks. They too have become behemoths that regularly engage in cartel activities, regulatory capture, and act with impunity and immunity. The Fed is the enabler. We have a lot of monopolistic and therefore fascistic behaviors that are corrupting both our economy, our government, and our Democracy. That is why we have seen the rise of Socialism. We need to address the root causes or we will end up with Socialists in power, instead of a healthy Capitalistic Republic.
