dmf - Re: "How long do you believe Sun will have this advantage with big institutions and mission critical areas? "

I don't see an end to this in any time soon - especially not within the next two years.

SUN has recognized their real assets are in software - Solaris, Java - and they are hedging their bets on hardware.

The best illustration of this is Sun's recent announcement of porting their Solaris O/S to the Merced IA64 platform.

That, I believe, will be key to getting the Merced designed in to serious enterprise environments - INDEPEPENDENT of MICROSOFT.

For SUN, they can still provide software without the expense of supplying hardware - Ultrasparc III. ALthough I'm sure they would like to sell both, selling one is better than selling none.
