The world used to be simpler, my great-great-grandfather's horse could always get him home - even if he wasn't in a fit state to pilot the buggy.

In spite of having only one AOA sensor, we don't know the sensor failed. The pilots likely triggered the MCAS auto-trim function in a banking prior to switching to auto-pilot, which inadvertently resulted in a too high pitch and thus the MCAS auto-correction.

I think there's a consensus that the 20 second duration of the MCAS correction is longer than pilots are prepared for, leading them to again pitch-up.
