The 737-max is yet another upgrade of the original 1967 aircraft designed to be low to the ground to accommodate the aluminum Air Stairs that unfolded onto the ground from an opening just below the door, and made it easy for luggage handlers to sling bags into the hold.

I thought the Air Stairs were sooo cool. My Uncle who worked for McDonnell Douglas pointed out they added unnecessary weight and delayed boarding.

Many regional airports lacked the infrastructure like portable ramps and baggage carts with conveyor belts.

Today the short landing gear provides more room in the hold, adds less weight, and an intractable design problem.
