It is a terrible thing to do. There are two key things here that you miss. (1) Nothing is free. Trying to court the RW will cost you the LW on policy alone. (2) You don't seem to understand what polarization means. A polarized society hates the other side so much that even positive traits associated with the opposition become a liability. For example, research shows that most people want intelligent well educated leaders. However when their adversary is recognized as being intelligent and intellectual, being one becomes a liability and they will prefer a "folksy" leader.

So yes, trying to connect with Trump supporters is a kiss of death, especially if you succeed.

>> I don't think that should be a bad thing to do. It would definitely make whoever gets the nomination easier to elect.

That is a fine sentiment, but my experience is that concept is simply not in the vocabulary of many if not most of the Trump supporters. And they do not have enough of an intellectual base to grasp it.

We will need to go forward without them, but thankfully we seem to have the numbers today with the new enlightened and educated women, smart as hell kids, and minorities who know who their friends are i.e. the liberals and Democrats.

While I think you are correct in your statement that candidates don't need to go after Trump supporters, I don't think that should be a bad thing to do. It would definitely make whoever gets the nomination easier to elect. It isn't/wouldn't be a bad thing to get people to think more about being inclusive, to make them feel that they have a stake in everybody in the country doing better, not just themselves or their particular group.
