I've only been to Portugal once and loved it, though, I don't speak the language. Canada is closer, but also in its own throws of Socialism. But they seem to be pretty laid back in comparison to our loony tunes left. Been to Croatia once as well and it was beautiful. The world's a big place and has a lot of great places to go for a long term sojourn. You are right about having an escape hatch just in case.
