BEIJING, Jan 19 Asia Pulse - Production and sales in China's electronics and information industries soared in 1997.

The increase in domestic computers was 38.2 percent; color televisions, 14.6 percent; and video compact disc ( VCD ) players, 300 percent.

Statistics released by China's Ministry of Electronics Industry show that many Chinese-made electronic products now dominate the domestic market.

To date, 57% of the color TV market is claimed by Changhong, Konka, Panda and TCL. Domestic VCD players have 81% of the market share.

The computer market is also dominated by Chinese manufacturers such as Legend and Great Wall. The two Chinese computer giants took 60% of the domestic market last year.

Program-controlled switchboards made in China appeared on the international market last year while their role at home was even larger.

The output of the electronics industry in 1997 is estimated at 380 billion yuan, up 24.9% over 1996. The industry made 12 billion yuan in profits, up 13.2 percent. These figures were announced at the recent annual meeting of the Ministry of Electronics Industry.

The ministry is estimating electronic exports will be valued at US$25 billion for 1997 when all the figures are in.

New breakthroughs have been reported in restructuring enterprises.

Mergers were completed by such groups as Changhong, Konka, TCL and Hisense which brought together enterprises in different regions or involved in different businesses.

Mergers also took place between state-owned enterprises and competitive township businesses as well as other collectively owned ones. The Haier Group and Xihu Electronics Group merged last year, for example, combining to gain competitive advantages in the market.

( BW)(NII-NORSAT)(NII.) Norsat Launches New Canadian Digital Satellite TV Product

ÿÿÿÿBusiness Editors

ÿÿÿÿSURREY, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 1998--NII NORSAT (TSE:NII.) (NASDAQ:NSATF) NII Norsat International Inc. (TSE Symbol: NII; NASDAQ Symbol: NSATF) announced today that it has completed arrangements for Aurora Distributing, its Canadian consumer products division, to distribute a line of Star Choice- compatible digital satellite TV receiving systems. Distribution of the systems, to be marketed under the "Norsat" brand name, will commence immediately. Norsat has over 15 years experience in developing and manufacturing satellite TV receiving equipment. Star Choice Communications, which commenced its DTH operations in April 1997, is Canada's leading digital satellite TV service provider.
ÿÿÿÿ"We are very excited about being able to offer this new product line to Canadians." says Lindsay Ryerson, Norsat's Vice-President and General Manager of Aurora Distributing. "Consumers will now have a wider selection of Canadian satellite systems from which to choose and the size and efficiency of Aurora Distributing's distribution network will ensure that our products are available to dealers across Canada at very competitive prices.
ÿÿÿÿOur choice of the Star Choice platform reflects our commitment to ensuring that purchasers of "Norsat" equipment will have access Canada's most attractive and rapidly expanding programming lineup."
ÿÿÿÿThe addition of this product line is a cornerstone in the restructuring of Norsat's Aurora Distributing division, following its December decision to discontinue sales of small-dish DTH systems which enabled Canadians to receive U.S.-originated programming. "We expect that the decrease in revenue which would otherwise have occurred as a result of our ceasing U.S. DTH equipment sales will be more than offset by the replacement revenue we will realize from Canadian DTH equipment sales." commented Ryerson.
ÿÿÿÿBill Barrett, President of Star Choice Marketing, added that "Star Choice is pleased that Norsat has chosen the market-leading Star Choice platform as the basis for its initial digital satellite TV product offering. We expect that Norsat will be a significant contributor to the expansion of the Star Choice subscriber base."
ÿÿÿÿNII Norsat International Inc. is a diversified technology company specializing in design and manufacture of satellite and cable communications equipment for commercial applications, which it sells through its offices in Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and China, and through a global network of more than 35 distributors.
