Sam,

West Bank Attack Raises Tensions as Israeli Elections Approach
By Isabel Kershner

March 17, 2019

JERUSALEM — A Palestinian carried out a stabbing and shooting attack in the occupied West Bank on Sunday, killing an Israeli soldier and a civilian, and ratcheting up tensions ahead of Israeli elections.

The attack came amid a heated campaign for the April 9 ballot in which a former general leading a new, centrist party is challenging the longtime incumbent, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, over who can provide Israelis with better security.
This has happened in some of the most recent elections that I remember in Israel. Attacks on Israelis go up when Netanyahu needs help because he is viewed, rightly or wrongly, as a person that can keep them safe. There have been several elections that I remember the attacks ratcheted up when the opposition party was ahead and it derailed the opposition coming to power. I think Hamas doesn't want a party that they can negotiate with. They want someone at the helm in Israel that they can hate. It helps keep them in power because their people aren't thinking about what Hamas is doing to them, they only think about what Netanyahu and the Israelis are doing to them. Sad situation.

It takes two to tango, as my mom used to say. I see no 'good guys' in much of the ME, including Israel.
