. . . but Augustine was talking about interpreting the bible in an allegorical way back in the late 4th, early 5th century.

Excellent point, Sam. Precisely right.

Yep - "Apologetics" were very popular. Until Kurt Godel burst everyone's bubble.

I am talking about when it became a comprehensive movement. That was not until the 19th and 20th century.

<<

19th and 20th century science caused Christians to go from a literal interpretation of the bibal to an allegorical one--too much wrong with it.

I hate to burst your sciencey bubble, Koan, but Augustine was talking about interpreting the bible in an allegorical way back in the late 4th, early 5th century. Jewish people were doing it before Jesus. People knew that stories were stories and that they represented reality in symbolic ways for intelligent people and in literal ways for children or people with different intellectual abilities. Augustine wrote in his Confessions that that is part of the genius of the Bible--it was able to speak to different people of all ages and in many different ways.

Dr. Avivah Zornberg is the best Midrash scholar of the Torah. Here books and videos have blasted my mind into space and moved me back toward Judaism.
