Alexa, You missed one of the important ways that males try to get the attention of females, that is by sliding a frog down their blouse.

Alexa, if you want to prove your point on biology setting the rules of human male/female and cultural behavior you'll first have to divorce yourself from your first statement... "I am a biologist. I think like a biologist." If you're going to assert mankind thinks through its behaivioral legacy then your statement can't be entirely true.

Secondly, one's looking for clues to human behavior in the living evolutionary history is well and good, but bear in mind that its precisely some of those historical traits that evolution wrote over while getting us here... and I'm not talking about culture. A primate study is not a human study, though one shows something of the other, it is not the other.

"I would argue that the "coarse" nature of those hominids, is stronger than the "veneer" of culture that has been overlaid in the last 50 thousand years."

How do you separate coarse nature from the veneer? Isn't there another more dominant "nature" pushing us in another direction whose evolving possibilities of form we now see around us? What's the impetus or primal instinct which spawns culture? Is that a genetic level inclination or something accidental which has no biological roots?

Jim

One must WEIGHT the behavioral tendencies for their potential

I would like to see some controlled experiments of how men would respond versus women to an environment where male competitors were out of the picture and there were essentially unlimited females. A. how would the females act towards one another.. ie would they butt heads and posture for wolf alfa female status or organize a lottery. Would that one man become a single dominant woman's reproduction property or would he just be allowed to cruise.

B. how would men respond to the same situation reversed. Would they butt heads or organize.
