modular libraries and objects, is "What *is* the application?" Today, very little of
Explorer is really the application ...

Actually, there is a whole lot more to Explorer than the modular libraries that it uses. Certainly, it uses DLLs for all of the GUI and file i/o mechanisms, but it must still do lots of work that is inherently Explorer-specific.
