No other site has forced me to "approve" their use of cookies.

Wow, that's really odd. I've seen it many times on other websites since the GDPR regulation went into effect in the EU.

I guess you could argue SI's notice was more "in your face" about it, but similar notices have literally appeared on dozens of websites I use and still does. It's usually at the bottom or top of the home page on sites I visit if I hadn't been there since the ruling and most often extends horizontally across the entire page. It stays until I click on the notice to approve the cookies.

Are you sure you haven't just missed it? They often look as simple as this:

Every site I go to has this statement about cookies. Usually just a bar on top of the bottom of the page stating cookie policy..
