* OFF TOPIC * Re: Divx

Here's an interesting article about Divx:

techweb.cmp.com

An excerpt:

Perlman said his problem with Divx goes beyond an unwillingness to support a rival retailer (Circuit City is a major Divx investor). "The whole scheme is no good," he said, speaking of Divx's plan to charge consumers $4.99 for a disc containing a movie they can watch within 48 hours of first playing the disc. Viewers would pay another $3 to play the disc for an additional 48 hours, or around $11 for unlimited viewing on their machines only. Divx players will cost around $100 more than DVD players, or around $699.

I wish I had some of dope Circuit Sh*tty execs were smoking when they came up with this ostrich egg.

Stitch, we discussed the limits of magnetic recording a while ago.
Today I got an answer from the IEEE...

You have received the following reply from the message you submitted to the IEEE Magnetics society webboard at yara.ecn.purdue.edu

According to the "consensus" at the recent MMM_Intermag meeting , there could be a superparamagnetic effect(Robert Scranton, IBM) but the limit could be (?) 40 Gb/in2. Long time though for it to happen , or not!
