3COM Selects Teradyne Analog Measurement Instrument for
Circuit-Board Test
09:14 a.m. Jan 19, 1998 Eastern

The 30 Z1890 test systems installed at 3COM's IL facility are used for testing
complex boards found in analog modems. Randy Bird, 3COM's In-Circuit Test
Manager, said, "In our high volume production environment, we're constantly
looking for ways to save time on our testing stage. With the PRISM-Z modules, we
achieve an increase in throughput and accuracy in testing small value capacitors.
The modules allow us to reduce test times by over 40% and increase the measuring
accuracy of our components. As a result, we've been able to increase our
manufacturing capacity."

BTW, have you seen any Hayes modems on the shelves?
I haven't.

David, haven't been to stores for 4 months. At that time Best Buy
and Sam's Club did not have HAYZy products, but were selling USRX.

PC HEAVYWEIGHTS REPORTEDLY JOINING FORCES
IN ULTRAFAST MODEMS

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Three of the largest
computer companies in the U.S. are teaming up
with a telecommunications giant to make
fast-speed modems widely available by
Christmas, the New York Times reported
Tuesday.

Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ), Intel Corp.
(INTC) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)
will
announce the venture at a communications
conference in Washington next week, the
newspaper said, citing executives involved in the
alliance.

They have met with the GTE Corp. (GTE) and
four or five Baby Bells to agree on technical
standards. Bell Atlantic (BEL) is said to be the
only major regional phone company to opt out of
the project.

The new modems, which would run at speeds up
to 30 times faster than existing popular models,
would plug into normal telephone lines but remain
connected to outside telephone lines at all times
without the need to dial a service provider, the
Times reported.

GA-GA OVER GIGABIT ETHERNET

The sale Wednesday of Sunnyvale's Yago Systems Inc. leaves three
prominent independent Silicon Valley start-ups in the hot field
for gigabit ethernet switching, considered the next promising
area for big networking companies.

Cabletron Systems Inc. (NYSE, CS) will buy the 75 percent of Yago
it didn't already own.

Bay Networks Inc.(NYSE, BAY), Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq, CSCO)
and Lucent Technologies Inc.(NYSE, LU) all have made similar
acquisitions.

That leaves only 3Com Corp. (Nasdaq, COMS) and perhaps IBM,
(NYSE, IBM) Sun Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq, SUNW) and Compaq
Computer Corp. (NYSE, CPQ) as likely acquirers of what's left.

These include three area start-ups: Extreme Networks in Cupertino,
Foundry Networks in Sunnyvale and Berkeley Systems in San Jose.

Hi David
Plenty of Hayes Accura's are on the shelf. I just bought one for
my ISP which is k56flex.
Pssst....it is in a box labeled "Practical Peripherals"
Its really an internal Hayes Accura.
Really, I have already downloaded one update for it from the
Hayes site.

I do agree though. Havent seen too many Hayes boxes except at Best
Buy here.
