European sales take up Asian slack Some corporate earnings
reports not as bad as expected

Wall Street has worried for weeks that the Asian economic
crisis would derail U.S. corporate profits. But as the early
round of fourth-quarter earnings numbers trickle in, several
technology companies are indicating surprising strength in
Europe that could offset some of damage from Asia.

"We've been very pleasantly surprised," said Eric Benamou,
CEO of 3Com, "that Europe is finally adopting Internet as a
set of technologies and infrastructure which is necessary for
their economies and corporations. We've seen that rate of
adoption accelerating."
