Cable modems just died a premature death. CPQ, INTC, and MSFT just signed the death warrant.

The obituary will read:

"Cable modems were consistently overlooked and ignored by their adoptive parents, the cable companies. These companies were 'too busy force-feeding 500 entertainment channels into US residents' homes' to care about internet users who were desperate for faster access. Even though the cable modems were very well liked by friends who were allowed access to them, the unsupportive role taken by the adoptive parents eventually took its toll. This weak link soon crumbled after an audacious and aggressive pact was unveiled by industry titans CPQ, INTC, and MSFT to back a hot rival access method. These companies are true "high-tech" blood relatives of the modem family, and the aggressive goals outlined were typical of "fast-lane" tech companies. Look for these new-found long-lost "real parents" to aggressively promote their new child. And look for the child to make millions of new friends. As for cable modems, RIP."
