Is DSL a threat?

Today's NYT had a front-page story about Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) being the next big thing in hi-speed net access. DSL is being backed by Intel, Microsoft, and Compaq, who are agreeing on standards for its implementation. It should allow at least 1.5 million bits per second at installation and monthly charges similar to @Home's, and should be available in many areas by Christmas 1998. Matt Wolfrom of @Home is mentioned in the article as saying DSL won't succeed. If you ask me, he seems defensive.

So, did I curse @Home to failure by buing shares, or is DSL somehow not the kiss of death for this company? I note that ATHM opened up on this news, which is curious. I thought I would lose 20% of my investment at the opening. It's not every day you hear that Microsoft and Intel are teaming up against you.
