Until a few years ago it was cheaper to mine a 2 - 3 carat stone than to make one. Made stones are now cheaper than mined stones up to 5 carat in size. Made stones are real diamond, they are not synthetic. The diamond mining game has maybe 5 years left, large mined and coloured stones will always be valuable, but not valuable enough to run large mining operations subsidized by smaller stones.
