Yes, managing people and their expectations is very time consuming, even if you've been given the powers of an Emperor.

I understand the position Xi or the president of the US are in, dealing with constituencies that don't agree with their actions - especially constituencies they can't afford to completely alienate.
.

Understanding what's that like enables me to know that Xi will ultimately come to agreements in conflict with Jay's prognostications, because Jay's posts are reflective of a powerful but misguided group of people in China.

The only agreement which works for anyone is and agreement which works for everyone. Anything else is extremely short-lived and self-sabotaging.
.

If those locked in "Jay-thought" are powerful enough, Xi may first have to give them a big taste of the failure caused by their demands, before they'll let Xi take reasonable actions.

Few in a position of leadership would ignore advice as frequently as Trump and suffer as many humiliating failures (like his 6% success rate in the US Court system) because this undermines the respect you need in dealing with others like Mitch McConnell and leaders of other nations. Other leaders have come to see Trump as a child needing managing rather than a leader to be negotiated with. But Trump doesn't seem to know how to be anything other than the petulant two year old he is.

Negotiations with China are so important that Trump has been shunted aside by professional negotiators who are continuing to seek the same goals sought by the Obama administration. In this particular instance I'm sure keeping Trump out of the China negotiations is taking an even more enormous effort by business and political leaders talking, coercing and otherwise trying to manage Trump.
