Moonray thanks for the post. Stop in at the AWRE thread, we've been following this there, Intel,MSFT & CPQ are using Awares DMT protocol. It was reported yesterday in the SJ Mercury. H&Q had indicated something was up a week or more back when they upgraded AWRE and mentioned the three biggies being involved.

Most important, perhaps, they would plug into normal telephone lines but would remain connected to the outside world at all times without the need to dial a service and without interfering with normal voice conversations over the same line.

Goal: 1.5 million bps

Compaq is the world's largest maker of personal computers; Intel is the largest maker of the microprocessors; and Microsoft is the world's largest software company.

Like, wow. This seems like a bolt out of the blue. Perhaps the 56K wars have made me sceptical and jaded (I'm also still waiting for US Worst to give my stupid ISP a stupid digital access line so I can get even 56K).

BUT, with the clout and determination of CPQ, INTC, and MSFT, together with some RBOCs, maybe the above quoted dream system could actually happen. I remain sceptical though. Show me the money!! is the frame of mind I'm in re faster net access. Add one year to the Christmas goal, and that's probably more realistic for when the avg lucky joe might have a shot at signing up for something like this, if indeed all the referenced parties can cooperate.
