More news.... BEAVERTON, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 20, 1998--Sequent Computer Systems, Inc., the leader in high-end open systems, today announced that BMW South Africa and the South African Motor Corporation (SAMCOR) have each signed contracts for NUMA-Q(TM) 2000 data center servers with Persetel's Open Systems Division, the Southern African distributor for Sequent. In a key move to ensure that it stays on target with its world-wide manufacturing thrust, BMW South Africa has placed an order with Persetel for the provision of a Sequent NUMA-Q 2000 system and 18 Compaq application servers. These systems will be the primary platform for deploying the SAP R/3 application which will form the basis of BMW SA's manufacturing operation. "We spent a lot of time looking for the right business partner," commented Bennie Vorster, IT manager of BMW South Africa. "Sequent has the horsepower to handle our long-term growth requirements and, with Persetel, has the expertise with large data center systems which we need to ensure the long term success of the SAP project. The increased capacity and greater reliability gained though Sequent's NUMA-Q 2000 system and its unique a pproach toward integrating Microsoft Windows NT Server into their overall R/3 offering also coincides with our strategic direction." Initial implementation of the systems, which also includes a significant professional services component, will begin in November 1997. Final completion is scheduled for January 1999. The system is estimated to initially have an average of 1,500 concurrent users and will track all parts in each vehicle, throughout the production process. This level of complexity will make BMW SA one of the biggest SAP manufacturing sites worldwide. "We are extremely proud to add BMW to our list of blue chip accounts," said John Lagaay, general manager of Persetel Open Systems. "BMW realized that this mission critical project would be safe in the handsof Persetel and Sequent. Apart from leading platform technology that Sequent provide, the skills that can be provided by the combination of our two organizations are unique and give BMW SA the assurance of success that it required." Persetel and Sequent's strong partnerships with industry-leaders Oracle(R) and Intel(R) helped to secure this business which represents a long-planned upgrade for BMW's systems infrastructure. In this process it fought off heavy competition from IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Sun Microsystems. SAMCOR Selects NUMA-Q and Baan The South African Motor Corporation (SAMCOR) has signed a contract for a Sequent NUMA-Q 2000 system from Persetel Open Systems and the application suite of software from Baan SA. The new IT infrastructure will replace the existing mainframe and will support the mission critical environment for all manufacturing, production forecasting and materials management. Persetel has a long, successful history with SAMCOR in providing and maintaining its mainframe systems. "We are confident that if anybody can take us through the transition to an open systems environment, it is Persetel" says Richard Wyatt, facilities m anager, SAMCOR. "We have a long standing relationship with the company and are certain of their skills and knowledge of our business. Sequent's NUMA-Q 2000 platform is already well established and so we've gone for the winning combination." SAMCOR currently produces 260 vehicles per day covering the full range of Ford, Mazda and Mitsubishi vehicles. The company has 16 percent of local market share and needs to improve production to successfully tackle the export market. The factory aims to produce fully built cars and complete knock-downs (CKD's) for world-wide distribution. The engine plant in Port Elizabeth will produce engines for local and international markets and catalytic converters for both Ford and Mazda. "SAMCOR has an aggressive expansion plan andthe combination of Baan and Sequent will ensure that these goals can be comfortably accommodated with the new infrastructure," says Gary Lawrence, managing director, Baan SA. Lawrence adds that "Sequent recently recorded the world record Baan benchmark of 5,400 users. This gives us the confidence we need on a project of this importance." "The deal is significant as the first local Sequent and Baan partnership," Lagaay commented. "Sequent and Baan have already proven their ability to deliver large-scale, complex projects at companies such as Boeing and we look forward to working with Baan to ensure that the SAMCOR project is equally successful." Implementation of the project will begin in November 1997 with an initial 350 Baan users and is scheduled for completion at the end of 1998. About Sequent Computer Systems, Inc.
