** Reply from Syncronys Softcorp pertaining to Big Disk vs Gimme Space ** I asked the question 4 hours ago and already have the following reply: My email: Are you coming out with a new version to include options that "Gimme Space" already has at the same price as your product? A friend of mine emailed "Gimme Space" and asked the following question followed by the answer from PGsoft. They, PGSoft, responsed within a day, I expect the same from you. A concerned investor of Syncronys and a product owner of BigDisk. > Tommy's email in my email: What benefits Gimme Space provide that BigDisk did not. Here is their response. Gimme Space provides you with the following features that BigDisk does not have: * Support for Removable Drives (i.e. Zip, Jaz, LS-120)* * Support for Network Servers * Support for Multiple Source Drives (C:, D:, etc.) * Orphan File Prevention When Uninstalling * Ability to Change Source or Target Drive Anytime *BigDisk purports to support removable drives and while you can move files to a removable drive, once you do that, you can never remove the media from the removable drive! This effectively turns the removable drive into a fixed drive since you can never remove the media. Gimme Space gives you automatic built in safety features, and BigDisk only provides limited safety. Certain files should never be moved (Windows directory files, Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, etc.). Gimme Space automatically detects, upon boot-up, those classes of files that should never be moved. > Their response Remember that when you look at these marketing messages, take them with a grain of salt. PGSoft is in the business of selling GimmeSpace, just as I am in the business of selling BigDisk. > > * Support for Multiple Source Drives (C:, D:, etc.) > Why on earth is this necessary? The point of BigDisk is to SIMPLIFY storage management, not make it worse. What purpose would most people have for being able to grow C: and D: at the same time? There is NOTHING preventing BigDisk from supporting this except that it would result in a difficult to use product with a confusing user interface (just like GimmeSpace). I have NO intention of adding this feature. And for what it's worth, magazine reviewers seem to agree with me. > * "Ability to Change Source or Target Drive Anytime" > This is only important if you can have more than one source, which BigDisk does not have (or need). I applaud the skill of PGSoft's developers, but it doesn't make the product any better. > * Support for Removable Drives (i.e. Zip, Jaz, LS-120)* > Yes, they are ahead of the curve here. We could have done this, too, if users could wait another six months. We will get this in there, probably in the 2.0 version. Bear in mind that less than 33% of POWER USERS even have a removable drive. We have limited support right now, but again BigDisk was never meant to be a "Infinite Disk" knockoff. We try to do a few things well, rather than many things poorly. > * Support for Network Servers > Yes, GimmeSpace supports network drives, but if the network goes down, data loss can result, and many applications may not work. BigDisk actually does support network drives, but we disabled this feature deliberately. I don't want this feature out there until I can be SURE that users will still be able to use ALL their applications even if the network is unavailable. > * Orphan File Prevention When Uninstalling > BigDisk will refuse to uninstall if it cannot undo EVERY file, so orphans are a nonissue. Therefore, we have this "feature" too. If there are bugs, we'll fix them. > > Some of their information is inaccurate. BigDisk scans the system EVERY TIME the machine boots and updates it's own safety profile. We actually are safer, as we provide two levels of protection - GimmeSpace - only one. > > When comparing BigDisk and GimmeSpace, ask yourself "What problem am I trying to solve?" and then make your judgements based on how good each product is as a SOLUTION. Don't be fooled by a feature comparison matrix. Are you buying features, or solutions to a problem? When looked at in this light, BigDisk is a better product. > > What we will NOT do is be lured into a technical leapfrog game, which would result in two feature-rich products that nobody wants. > > Hope this helps. > > Regards, > Steve Sussman > Product Manager, Syncronys BigDisk > >
