Microsoft backs off in Europe www5.zdnet.com

"Microsoft seems to be prepared to offer in due time remedies so that the Commission does not necessarily need to bring the case to a final decision," Van Miert told a news conference on competition policy.

He added that the case had to do with "contracts related to service providers (containing) clauses which are flying in the face of competition."

Very interesting. My (mordant as usual) take: Microsoft still thinks it's got enough backing and legal firepower in the U.S. to play hardball with the DOJ and the judicial branch, not so in Europe. Sometimes you got to do a strategic retreat or two in the war for world domination, no sense opening up a second front, for the moment. Them Europeans are all commies anyway, now that the Iron Lady isn't around anymore. Details will be forthcoming, I'm sure.

Cheers, Dan.
