What if it's 12 months? Or 18? Or 24? What if the RBOC that serves your area never gets around to offering it? If you always wait until the next technology becomes available, you'll always be three generations behind.

<Why would I want to buy a 56K modem from COMS>

Because 56K modems are relatively cheap and it's working all over the world right now.

xDSL technology is much faster but it's also much more expensive. It has to be supported by your local Telco and the majority of telcos are not supporting them right now.

This Intel/Cpq/msft deal if they can arrive at a standard, should be good for everybody - after some thoughts.

Right now we have standards for 56K(coming Feb) and Cable Modems - standards are going to promote sales for everybody.

Duh! Because, it will cost you more for the other "service".
Most people rather pay $20 for a 56K service than to pay who knows how much for a 1.5M. $90, $100, $200, $300.

Plus, 3COM will have its own line of xDSL, which will provide way beyond 1.5M.

Why would I want to buy a 56K modem from COMS in March (when the standard arrives) when I can just wait 8-9 months for a 1.5Mbit modem that stays connected all the time?

1) It's not available in your area at all. I doubt it will appear everywhere in 8-9 months. Bell Atlantic, my NYC telco, says 2nd half 98 to begin offering the service. Who knows when it really will be.

2) When it is available, if you more than 2 1/2 miles from the telco CO, your too far.

3) If you can get it it will be more expenseive. Bell Atlantic would only tell me under $100 a month and you stll have to get an ISP on top of that.

4) If your a corporate user it may not be supported by your IT department for a while.

5) Corporate road warriors can't get ADSL on the road.

6) Joe six pack says "ADSL who?"

Those are the ones that come quickly to mind. I suspect the price will be further from $100 rather than closer but who knows. I'd probably go for it but I doubt it's a sure thing for everyone.

whatever happend to cable modems...I thought that was gonna kill traditional modems till 3 weeks ago..looks like good old billy could not get his way with the cable companies and now a little horseshit to scare them off a bit...I wouldn't hold my breath for these modems by the end of the year..
