And another thing that often happens in my part of the world .... an employer will contribute between 40% and 50% of one's monthly Medical Aid premium.

In such instances it then pays to choose the Medical Aid (MA) plan that gives one a "Day-To-Day" benefit. That means that if one goes to see a doctor for any reason, one can claim that cost from one's MA. The MA gives one an annual overall allowance for that option. Unfortunately the extra annual premium that one has to pay for that option is always less than the overall annual financial benefit, so if one was paying for the total MA it wouldn't make sense to take that Day-to-Day benefit. In that instance one would only take the Hospital Plan option.
However, if one's employer is paying towards one's MA then it does pay to take that Day-To-Day option.

Another very useful add on is a Medical Insurance option which costs about $25 a month. This option pays the extra cost that one may incur, while one is in hospital, if a surgeon or specialist charges a fee higher than the Medical Aid's tariff for that service. That $25 covers a family.

So to sum it all up, for about $175 a month one can go to any Hospital of one's choice, immediately, and get every single item paid for while in hospital, PLUS get any extra costs charged by a specialist, etc, paid for by one's Medical Insurance.
