Therefore, what you saw happen in Africa over the past 30 to 40 years when many African nations gained "Independence", was that they rapidly held Elections, which were hailed by the "West" as a great "advancement", etc... However, what then happened was those who stood for election as President each came from a particular tribe, even though they stood for different parties. The winner of that election would be the one whose tribe had the greatest numbers and who would inevitably would have voted for one of their own. That is how Robert Mugabe beat Joshua Nkomo in the early Zimbabwean election, and why it was only in the last year or two ago that he was still President. Unfortunately Western nations know very little about the Tribal nature of Africa because, after all, they have never lived within it. You are not going to get, say, 90% of the Zulus voting for a Xhosa. In fact, you cannot even get Zulu men living in the same set of accommodation as Xhosa men. They would be "at each other's throats" in no time. And on top of it all we have 11 TRIBES IN SOUTH AFRICA !!! Needless to say, there are also other important considerations and governing factors .... a generally low level of education among many black South Africans is one of them. That is one of the BIG mistakes that Nelson Mandela made when he became the ANC's first black president of this country. He did not put enough effort and money into educating the black youth who didn't previously get the best of education. Against the advice of those who knew better than he did about what was needed in a Minister of Education, he appointed some idiot named Bhengu who came up with a ridiculous system he called "Outcomes Based Education". This has proved to be a disaster to the extent that the ANC, themselves, have thrown it into the dust bin. We now have Cyril Ramaphosa as president. He has been a successful business man and was very close to Nelson Mandela. He was one of the chief negotiators in the drawing up of our Constitution prior to the 1994 elections when the ANC came into power. He is a far better man for the job than that complete Corrupt a***ehole, Zuma, that we had previously. We have our 5 year General Election next month so it will be interesting to see the outcome.
