OSAKA (Nikkei)--Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (P.MSE, 6752) began this month producing digital videodisc players in China at a local subsidiary, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported in its Wednesday morning edition.

Citing company sources, the newspaper said the consumer electronics giant hopes to cash in on Chinese demand for DVD players, which is expected to grow to 500,000 this year from 200,000 in 1997.

China is believed to offer a large potential market as large volumes of video CDs are in circulation. Matsushita will test a production line to enhance the plant's operating performance, and plans full-scale production within a year.

Matsushita expects initial output of about 500 DVD players a month for sale in China. The players can play music and video CDs in addition to DVDs.
