AAPL's NC hardware needs to be both network and desktop capable

IBM (PowerPC) and LOTUS have prepared software along those lines .

IBM seeds Independent Software Vars (ISV) with their Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) application building blocks for a 10% cut:

techweb.com

IBM's EJB by definition is NC and Desktop suitable .

However LOTUS's NC "only" software is ready for IBM's (PowerPC) and Oracle's NCs (?) :

techweb.com

LOTUS awaits Sun's unspecified NC , but fails to mention AAPL's NC , yet Senor Jobs supposedly has a running NC in a suitcase .

MSFT's Office 98 (AAPL desktop) may be a LOTUS NC tender spot , as AAPL's rumored NC if both a NC and desktop , would run both existing (MSFT) software and LOTUS's new JAVA applications .

AAPL's Web Ojects produces both JAVA and "C" code as program source so maybe there is hope for AAPL's "rumored" dual purpose NC .

Considering that harddrives are dirt cheap these days...it's hardly the place to skimp on. Local storage cost very little but makes everything 100 times easier...but apparently it'll be optional along with removable storage like Zip etc. It all sounds very strange to me.

Eric, that the NC does not have a hard drive is the whole freaking point, if I may be so blunt. If it did then it would be something akin to Microsofts NetPC concept. And as you stated, it makes things 100 times easier to have local storage. This illustrates the change of paradigm that needs to take place before the NC can thrive.

I wasn't a real fan of Wag The Dog, the De Niro/Hoffman flick, but Apple had pretty good product placements in it. PowerBooks-a-plenty, each with Apple logos prominent on the case and screen.

Who pays whom for that sort of thing? Seems Apple would pay, but it's so subtle it can't be that expensive. Maybe no money changes hands but they provide the props.

OT News Flash! CBS News reports that "Q" and "Z" are being officially added to the keypad of telephones. Mine already have them, but much as Macintosh PC Exchange was a relief to those of us in mixed Mac-DOS land, it's nice to know we're all singing from the same page when dialing vanity telephone numbers.

Eric,

NC's: From my point of view I don't believe these will become
popular in the consumer market. Prices for everyday computers
are so low and dropping that I cannot see anyone haveing interest.
Also most consumers don't need a fast chip for any thing but games.
And gamers are geeks who want that hard drive.

Actually after reading this MacReality review I can see it.
macnn.com
Rather than spending $800 on a DVD machine for your TV, you could
spend $1000 for a MacNC and get that DVD + a computer. It could work.

In the corporate market they do make sense to network admin. in that
the maintainence can be easily handled. For most uses though I can't
see why they would need such a hot chip, except for engineering apps.

Maybe Apple has decided to reinforce their already strong presence in
the engineering market. This would make sense in that Apple seems to have accepted its position as a niche player and it has decided to concentrate on consolidating its position in its strong areas. At least for now.
