President Donald Trump on Thursday morning tweeted out a screencap from Lou Dobbs’s Fox Business show purportedly showing his approval rating at a robust 55 percent.

There’s just one problem: That number is inaccurate.

The poll in question — a Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service national survey of 1,000 registered “likely” voters conducted between March 31 and April 4 — actually pegs Trump’s job approval rating at 43 percent, with 52 percent disapproving. Forty percent of respondents said they have a favorable impression of Trump, compared to 55 percent who have an unfavorable one.

It is true that 58 percent of respondents approve of the job Trump is doing on the economy — an impressive number, and one that isn’t particularly surprising given the strong job market and other positive economic indicators.

But beyond that, the Georgetown poll actually contains lots of worrisome findings for Trump, such as:

49 percent said they find Trump’s “style and comments” to be “frequently insulting, and he has the wrong approach on many issues,” compared to just 27 percent who said they think he “tells it like it is and he has the right approach on the issues I care most about.”33 percent approve of Trump’s handling of health care issues, compared to 58 percent who disapprove.57 percent said they think the country has “gotten off on the wrong track,” compared to 35 percent who think things are “going in the right direction.”Perhaps more ominously, 57 percent said they think “it’s time to give a new person a chance” in the 2020 presidential election, compared to 38 percent who said Trump “deserves re-election.”According to RealClearPolitics’ poll average, Trump’s approval rating is currently nearly 10 points underwater, with 43.2 percent approving and 52.7 percent disapproving. Since his inauguration, Trump’s approval rating has never been higher than 46 percent — a number he last hit on February 4, 2017 — meaning he’s never come close to sniffing the 55 percent he falsely boasted about on Twitter.

On Thursday, Fox Business Network issued an on-air correction acknowledging that Dobbs’ coverage of the poll “was not entirely accurate.” Trump’s tweet, however, remains up.

OOPS! HOW HUMILIATING: Fox News and Fox Business Correct Lou Dobbs Claim About Trump’s ‘Soaring’ Approval
The Trump-loving Fox host—who has been patched into the president’s Oval Office calls—will also address the issue on his show Thursday night.

President Trump on Thursday morning boasted of “great news” reported the previous night by Fox Business Network host Lou Dobbs, claiming his approval ratings are “soaring.” That claim, however, was wildly inaccurate, and both Fox Business and Fox News have now been forced to issue on-air corrections.

While highlighting a recent Georgetown Politics poll showing Trump’s job approval rating on the economy is 58 percent, Dobbs—a pro-Trump host who has been patched into Oval Office phone calls—claimed the same poll revealed Trump’s overall approval rating to be “soaring” at 55 percent. That figure would represent a huge jump from other polls showing the president in the low 40s.

“The president’s victories are showing up in the polls according to a Georgetown University poll,” Dobbs said Wednesday night, accompanied by a graphic. “The president’s overall approval is now 55 percent—let’s hear that, 55 percent—and approval rating for president’s handling of the economy, a robust 58 percent. Fifty-five percent is pretty robust too, don’t you think?"

On Thursday morning, the president shared Dobbs’ on-air graphic, and wrote: "Great news! #MAGA."

Georgetown University Politics director Mo Elleithee, a Fox News contributor, pointed out that the poll actually shows Trump’s approval rating at 43 percent. The 55-percent rating Dobbs doubted was actually Trump’s unfavorability rating.

Fox Business Network reporter Blake Burman issued an on-air correction Thursday morning. “It’s been a quite start to the day for President Trump, though he did send out a tweet this morning from the Lou Dobbs show last night on Fox Business,” Burman said. “That tweet featured a poll that was not entirely accurate, which Fox Business would like to correct.”

“According to a poll from Georgetown University, 58 percent of respondents approved of the president’s handling of the economy. That portion of the graphic was right,” he further explained. “However, the graphic also showed that 55 percent of the respondents approve of the president, that number is not correct. The 55 percent number was those who have an unfavorable impression of President Trump.”

And on Fox News, White House correspondent Kevin Corke issued another—this time, slightly bungled—correction, claiming there was “a typo in the graphic” (ignoring the fact that Dobbs’ spoken monologue was entirely about the false 55-percent figure).

A Fox Business spokesperson, meanwhile, told The Daily Beast that Dobbs will also address the issue on his own Thursday night broadcast.

As of publication, the president’s tweet on the fake job-approval numbers is still active.

OOPS! The Trump-Fox Symbiosis of Stupid Continues With an Extremely Wrong Poll
Ol' Lou Dobbs is back again.

Living in the Dumbest Time in History, you get to learn a thing or two about polls. The most important thing to know is that Real Polls show the president Winning. Any poll that is negative towards the president—say, it shows poor ratings of his job performance, or that he may lose to a prospective election opponent—is Fake. This is a similar phenomenon to Fake News, a term that the president has openly admitted encompasses any report that he doesn't like. Things like "reality" or "what's actually happening out in the world" are not relevant. Do they like me, or do they not like me?

Once you've digested that, it will be far easier to understand what happened Wednesday night on the television show hosted by Lou Dobbs, the fashy Benjamin Button. According to the Washington Post's Robert Costa, the view among some Trump allies is that "the most influential person in the president’s ear is Lou Dobbs, through the TV each night." This is somewhat concerning considering Ol' Lou recently urged Trump to declare a (phony) national emergency to "simply sweep aside the recalcitrant left in this country" after Congress would not give him money for his Big, Beautiful Wall. Sweep aside Congress and do whatever you want, My King, Constitution be damned.

Dobbs may primarily have Trump's attention on the issue of immigration, since the president already has a shadow chief-of-staff who speaks to him through the teevee in the form of Sean Hannity. Yes, this is the world we live in, where the world's most powerful man waits for guidance to arrive via the television cable. He certainly can't be expected to read. Anyway, Ol' Lou promoted a poll that was so Real the president just had to tweet a screenshot:

Wow! 55 percent approval!

It didn't take long for everyone and their political-reporter brother to point out that the actual Georgetown Politics poll did not show this. That includes Mo Elleithee?, the director of the institute, who logged on to say that while the 58 percent approval number on the economy is right, Trump's overall approval was actually 43 percent—about where he's been throughout his presidency. 52 percent disapprove.

So what's that 55 percent number? That's the percentage of people who have an "unfavorable impression" of the president. They don't like him. In fairness, he's doing better than Nancy Pelosi. But the poll doesn't really improve for El Jefe from there: just 38 percent say he deserves reelection, and 57 say it's time to give someone else a chance. Of course, this will matter exactly squat once it's a one-on-one matchup between him and the unknown Democratic nominee.

The Symbiosis of Stupid Has Reached Its Climax

It's a Banner Day for the Dumbest Time in History

This episode remains instructive, however. Here is one of the president's most cherished propagandists pushing blatantly false information that paints him in a better light. Because it is a nice thing about the president, the president amplifies it regardless of truth value. This is the Symbiosis of Stupid at work in its most basic and easily deconstructed form. More often, the misinformation is subtle: a twisting of words, a removal from context, or the elevation of the worst example of some group—say, an undocumented immigrant who committed murder—as representative of that group in defiance of the statistics on immigrant crime. This is how it will go from now on, until it gets worse.

Oh, and don't hold your breath waiting for Dobbs to correct the record on his show tonight. The truth is whatever you can get enough people to believe.

Update (1:30 p.m.): During a segment on the arrest of Julian Assange this morning, Fox Business issued a correction in which reporter Blake Burman spoke while the camera panned over a still photo of the president.

It’s been a quite start to the day for President Trump, though he did send out a tweet this morning from the Lou Dobbs show last night on Fox Business. That tweet featured a poll that was not entirely accurate, which Fox Business would like to correct. According to a poll from Georgetown University, 58 percent of respondents approved of the president’s handling of the economy. That portion of the graphic was right. However, the graphic also showed that 55 percent of the respondents approve of the president, that number is not correct. The 55 percent number was those who have an unfavorable impression of President Trump. While there were no graphics and it may not have been particularly easy for viewers to follow, that was indeed a correction. Fox News issued a similar one, so credit where due. The president's tweet remains up.

OOPS! Trump shares fake poll numbers hyped by Fox Business’ Lou Dobbs — his actual numbers are much lower
It appears Dobbs has gotten his poll numbers totally mixed up!.... or did he do it on purpose knowing the polls numbers were FALSE & FAKE???

President Donald Trump on Thursday shared phony polling numbers hyped by Fox Business’ Lou Dobbs — but the actual poll they’re based on shows his numbers are much lower.

Dobbs this week cited a poll from Georgetown Politics that he said showed Trump had a 55 percent approval rating.

However, it appears Dobbs has gotten his poll numbers totally mixed up, as the actual poll shows 55 percent of voters view Trump unfavorably, while just 40 percent have a favorable view. When it comes to job approval, 42 percent of voters approve of the job Trump is doing, while 52 percent disapprove.

What’s more, 48 percent of voters in the survey said they had a “strongly” unfavorable opinion of Trump, while just 27 percent said they had a “strongly” favorable opinion of him.

Read the entire poll here.
