Projector lamps today will give you a couple of thousand hours at the low/med end, which isn't enough for a monitor's full lifetime needs, but even I can change a light bulb. That isn't a killer, but I agree it's a good point. The killer app. are diode lasers which within 10 years or less will be available in each primary colors and able to produce multiple Watts in each color line. Then you'll see elegant and long lived monitors since diode lasers can use much lihgter supplies and generate a lot less heat simplifying the package. You can also do sequential color, rather than splitting the beam into colors and recombining it later with expensive optics.
