I think this new release is DSL and is different from ADSL.

My understanding of cable is that it is costly to upgrade to two-way. For some cable companies they do have a low bandwidth uplink but it is very noisy.

You are right, the cable bandwidth must be shared. To what extent depends on how many in the neighborhood are wired to the same box and are using Internet services at the same time. Also depends on how many channels the cable company wants to dedicate.

@Home provides high speed two-way service, but I believe it is fiber.
Very expensive to upgrade existing infrastructure.
