*OT* John, why don't you buy an simple A/B data switch instead of swapping printer cables to use the two printers? I can recommend the Belkin brand; they're about $18.95 (several yrs ago anyway). Mine has lasted for about 4 yrs so far. A client of mine has two printers also, and they bought the cheapest switch they could find, and it started giving intermittent bad connections -- only it took over a year to isolate the screwy printing problems back to the data switch!

Hi John,
I'm not sure about USB. Currently, machines ship with the ports but software support does not arrive until WIN98, I think today any USB device needs to provide support via drivers shipped with that device. You might ask Meathead on the Dell thread about this, I bet he would know.
