Well said.. but that usually happens in relationships that have gone acidic, where goading is the motive to empathize at all.

Good point. Taht's awful, too. The people who encourage you to "open up" and afterwards you think "My God!" and realize you've been used. So taht kind of empathy is indeed pretty much the same as self-absorbed "vulnerability".
