The latest is as follows, but first a bit of background: There are 3 kinds of ridgeback dog. The largest is Rhodesian Ridgeback which makes a great family pet and is an all around great dog. They are relatively expensive, but not prohibitively so. Next is the Thai Ridgeback. Being mostly stray dogs and highly independent, they are not everyone's pet (I would not want one). Basically this is a dog that has learned to think for itself and stay away from people so it can survive on its own. It is not very trainable and is not suitable for most tasks - nor are they particularly affectionate or child friendly (or dog friendly for that matter). On the other hand, they are very adaptable and not territorial, which makes them low maintenance. The last is the smallest and the rarest. The Vietnamese Phu Quoc Ridgeback. This dog is only found on a small island and unlike the Thai Ridgeback, he learned to depend on humans for his needs. So they make great pets. Nonetheless, they are mostly strays on the island. And naturally they are rare. . . Now on to the story. A while back someone in Paris paid 10,000 Euros for a Phu Quoc Ridgeback (what a dumb thing to do!). The news got around, especially to Vietnam where most of these dogs are strays (imagine how dumb the Vietnamese think the Westerners are). To my surprise, I found a Phu Quoc Ridgeback ad on Kijiji (the Canadian version of Craig's List). Checking the images, you can see the some woman (clearly not not doing well financially) has converted 3/4 of her living room (apartment?) to a kennel for the dogs and is trying to sell them $3k. I don't know whom I should feel worse for - the dog that is way out of its environment, or the woman who has to live like that make some money. And I doubt that she'll be able to make a sale. Anyway, the night before that I saw a Thai Ridgeback puppy for $50 on the same site (basically the owner is giving them away). Knowing what they are, I did not apply. Apparently, the seller saw the ad for the other Ridgebacks and removed his price and now it is to be discussed privately! I just find the whole thing insane and another example of how what someone did half way around the world is having ripple effects elsewhere.
