AFTER THE BELL- IBM halted, Qualcomm up

NEW YORK, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Trade in International Business Machines shares was halted after the bell Monday as the computer giant released fourth quarter earnings results that nudged past Wall Street estimates.
According to First Call, analysts' consensus figures put IBM earnings at $2.15 per share, compared with $2.16 posted by the company. IBM also said its net income rose 10 percent to $2.1 billion for the quarter.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm Inc ((QCOM - news), which makes communications systems, saw its stock price surge after the bell to 49, from a 47-1/2 close.

The company reported first quarter diluted earnings of $0.50 per share, up considerably from a year-earlier $0.13 per share.

Also making a late-afternoon run, Xilinx Inc ((XLNX - news) saw its shares rise to 39-1/2, from a market close of 38-1/4. Xilinx, which supplies field programmable gate arrays and related software, was expected to post third quarter earnings of $0.38 per share, according to First Call.

Instead, the company reported earnings per share of $0.40, compared with $0.33 per share for the year-ago period.

Despite a tidal wave of earnings results that were released late in the day, dealers said most stocks were in line with their closing values.

''I really haven't seen too much going on after the bell,'' a dealer said.

Ascend Communications Inc ((ASND - news) gained a quarter of a point after reporting its fourth quarter earnings at $0.24 per share. That figure overshot analysts' $0.22 per share estimate.

Dealers said Ascend reached 31 in after-hours trading, up from a 30-3/4 close.

Dealers also said that At Home Corp ((ATHM - news) and Adaptec Inc ((ADPT - news) traded fairly actively, although neither moved out of line with its market close.

Adaptec had third quarter diluted earnings of $0.23 per share, compared with $0.36 per share for the same period a year earlier.

At Home reported a fourth quarter loss of $1.55, including charges, compared with a loss of $0.10 per share for the year-ago period.

The New York Stock Exchange said session one had volume of 1.1 million shares, while session two had volume of 4.6 million shares.
