John -

What are the profit margins expected to be on these devices?

A damn sight higher than on a $0 IE.

Actually, I expect they're very small, but SUNW is just trying to take SGI's O2 business, and our business with our future NT box(es).

John,

Good question. I don't really know. What I do know is that
SUNW has created a computer that uses its existing ultra-sparc
technology base with some parts supplied by PC suppliers, which
allowed them to lower their costs. SUNW also took advantage
of PC manufacturing methods which also lowered the cost.

It seems to me that you pretty much get what you pay for with
hardware. The real advantage to the Ultra-5 is the software:
getting Solaris/Java/Wabi together in a package with a box that
doesn't cost an arm & a leg.

I'm going to make a wild guess that SUNW's margins for the Ultra-5
are not going to be large, but they may make up for it in volume.

cheers,

cherylw
