Note that you are emphasizing the available of VAR solutions, rather than support for the general customer.

Mark, this statement is not relevant. Informix uses datablades supported by VARs. In fact the majority of the available datablades are from VARs. Therfore, Customer support is co-linked with the VAR in either case. Under Sybase's architecture it would be easier to identify the root cause as being from the VAR or Sybase side.

1. How much SQL3 syntax is supported? What kind of objects can be created? Are Rowtypes supported? Sets? Multisets? Arrays? (the last is probably not yet supported by IFMX yet).

SQL3 is not yet an ANSI standard, is it? I believe Sybase's Bob Epstein chairs the SQL board. To understand in detail the objects that are supported under the Sybase architecture, you have to look at each Specialty Data Store VAR's specific capabilities.

2. Can different vendor object extensions be supported in the same table? Can I use the spatial object from Vendor A and the picture support from Vendor B in the same table?

Yes. The Sybase architecture utilizes the Component Integration Services layer to handles this. The object data types can be logically viewed as extensions of a logical table or a view. This allows better effeciences for the applications and services that don't require the special data type.

3. How many added index types are supported? R-trees?

Again you would have to look at the VAR documentation in order to get the whole picture.

Syborg or anyone else, If you can provide additional information or clarification please do. I realize I have only touched the surface.

Dave...

Like IFMX, SYBS (and probably others) allow customers to extend the server capabilities on their own. I suspect however that the ROI is greater when you have access to a solution from a VAR/partner specializing in a particular data type. I will need to research the other questions you raised. I have not experienced customers requesting mixed extended datatypes in one table first hand.
