Good points. I've been using KISS since instructing in the armed forces, back in the 60's.

To clarify ideas I've been using self-made graphics that you won't find elsewhere -- though rarely, cut-and-paste from other sources are used -- because nobody else is talking about the subjects combined here. Try to find a site -- here on SI or anywhere else -- discussing Schrodinger, Georgescu-Roegen, Herman Daly and others who've been voices in the wilderness for decade.

When you add statistical prediction of mass behaviour — first imagined by Asimov as psycohistory in the 50's — things become still more difficult.

If we discuss these matters in linear cause-and-effect fashion, it doesn't work. In the same way that weather, for example, defies simple explanation. Yes, prediction has improved greatly but even now, the best you can get is probabilities, and they get worse as your time horizon stretches into the future. Mankind simply doesn't have the computing power to calculate all the interdependent variables. And that's just weather -- not the combination of mass behaviour, economics, and energy.

Better to use the science of complexity, chaos theory and fractals.

Returning to KISS, this seems pretty simple: if you have energy, you can have life. If you have excess energy, you can have growth -- and in economics, profit. Insufficient energy? Decline and death until you reach stasis -- where energy demand matches energy supply.

These aren't my ideas -- they're what Erwin Schrodinger, Georgescu-Roegen, Herman Daly et al have been saying for decades. Why people can't grasp the simple truth above, simply stated, I just don't understand.

Changes will be made, and the thread will be re-organized. Thanks for your comments.
