Alexa,

Didn't Conrad learn English by going off to sea? I still have a hard time accepting that he and Nabokov could write such English and not have been raised as native speakers. Nabokov did have a British nanny, and most of the Russian aristocracy knew and used French, so he did have a trilingual background. I may disagree with Janice about Nabokov's German. He may have written his lepidopteral treatises in that language, but, again from my cluttered memory, I seem to recall that he never got along well in German. That may have been the reason he left Berlin, where so many Russian expatriates ended up.

I wonder if Conrad remained fluent in Polish, or if he ever wrote in that language?

Jack
