Nation states do not have have "friends" - they have interests.

While the Soviet Union was around, the threat of Communism (capital C) curbed some of the worst tendencies of the US. The US did not do anyone any favors. They acted in their own best interest - as they should have. It so happens that they picked a win-win path on several occasions (not always) and made maximum PR of it. Again, as they made hay where they could, as they should have.

But none of that makes anyone owe them anything. Where the interests diverge, so should the state's relationship. I always found it absurd how Trump's "America First" slogan resonated with so many people, as if other presidents put the welfare of other nations first.

No nation should pin its hopes and aspirations on the political whims of another one.
