Fujitsu studying cutting capex on new microchip plant

TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Fujitsu Ltd said it is studying cutting capital
investment on a planned microchip plant in Japan, as well as delaying the
start-up of the plant.
Fujitsu said it may abandon plans to introduce 300 millimetre wafer
production lines at the new plant, a move which will cut total investment
costs to around 100 bln yen from an initial estimate of 150-180 bln yen.
Fujitsu said it is also examining the possibility of deferring the start
of construction of the plant due to the prolonged pressure on semiconductor
prices.
Construction was originally due to start in the first half to September
1998. Fujitsu said it has no plan to cancel the project.
